The inadvertent expat blogger behind HumbleRidgePaper

Hello, I'm Sophie
I work as a project manager, I am a parent, and I am an expat living in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
A few years back I moved here with my family. What began as a temporary assignment gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Began
Moving to Netherlands wasn’t part of our long-term plan. Like many international moves for work, it started as a job opportunity and soon grew into something far larger.
The early months were demanding — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Everyday tasks seemed more complex than they should.
The Adjustment Phase
There was culture shock, uncertainty, and a lot of learning through doing. But gradually routines settled in. We found places that worked for us, connected with other families, and began building something that felt steady.
Why I Created HumbleRidgePaper
Most information online was either corporate relocation guidance or superficial tourism content. What was missing was an honest, everyday family perspective.
This site exists to bridge that gap — practical advice drawn from real life in Netherlands.
What This Site Covers (And What It Isn’t)
This site is:
- Real-world experience from living in Netherlands
- Centered on family life and daily realities
- Updated when changes truly occur
This site isn't:
- Not a tourism authority resource
- Not a sponsorship-driven review platform
- Not a generic travel blog
Looking Ahead
Our time in Netherlands continues, and the learning journey goes on. As long as the information remains useful, I’ll keep recording what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in Rotterdam or anywhere in Netherlands, please feel free to get in touch.
Best regards,
Sophie
